First and foremost, 9S is an android, and although he is not built for battle, he is still stronger than an average human, and capable of fighting against enemies on his own. He is able to wield a sword, broadsword, spear and use martial arts, although he seems to prefer attacking from a distance. He is also highly durable and even if his body parts are blown off, he is able to move and continue fighting at times.
He is also able to upgrade his abilities through plug-in chips, allowing him to enhance certain abilities such as his movement speed and attack power. The cloth he wears over his eyes are actually goggles that allow to gauge enemy level, health and location.
However, his main strength comes in his hacking skills. He is able to hack into just about any machine and take control, destroy the core and extract information. His effectiveness is so highly regarded, that the Commander chooses to continue deploying 9S despite the dangers. With this hacking ability and strong intuition, plus his ability to piece together information, he can become a formidable force on the battle field, even able to push 2B, an android created for battle.
Additionally, 9S seems to be able to tinker around with machinery to make them perform better during machines (without permission). He actively goes to search out new things to explore and apparently retains dangerous enemy attack patterns as a hobby (even though it violates regulations) When not on the field he spends most of his spare time honing his skills in hacking and analyzing enemy data at the bunker’s large terminal. His concentration is so intense, he can go on for hours at times without moving, just focusing on his work.
CANON PERSONALITY:

As the Scanner type android, curiosity is a core feature of his existence. His primary purpose is to perform the reconnaissance mission for the war against the machine lifeforms sent by the aliens. It’s engrained in his coding to be highly inquisitive, aggressively pursuing new information and the truth. In fact, from what can be gleaned by his actions in-game and Ending G, it seems that to him, gathering new knowledge is more important to him than actually winning the war. It’s only from a sense of duty and orders that he focuses on fighting in the battlefront. And at times, even that sense of duty and orders are not enough to stop 9S from continuing his pursuit of knowledge.
{ His strong curiosity and his determination to pursue it is a double-edged sword. It allows him to gather the necessary information against the machine lifeforms and succeed in his mission. However, his questions are at times not only aimed toward the enemy, but to his allies as well. Once he begins to wonder about something, 9S will even defy orders or hack into servers he is forbidden to access to obtain the answer. His skill in gathering information is seen as a danger, causing him to be executed by 2E to keep silent. However, because his skills are indispensable to mankind, 9S continues to be recreated and deployed, only to be terminated by 2E when getting too close to the truth of humanity. This cycle has continued on for at least 3 years, with him being terminated every 2 or 3 months. Although 9S does not remember his past model’s memories, he follows the same path each time. }

Even though his urge to gain new information may trump his sense of duty at times, 9S is aware he is a soldier in this war against the machine lifeforms. His loyalty to humankind is unshakable and at times he will offer his life to defeat the enemy. While he is not built for battle, he will fight to exterminate the enemy when necessary.
For most of the game, he views the machine lifeforms as an enemy to be destroyed for mankind. However, by meeting Pascal and other peaceful machines, 9S is able to relax his view on exterminating each and every one of the machines. The unique, friendly machines pique his interest and at times he is found commenting if he can take them apart to understand what makes them the way they are. Near the mid-point of the story, 9S seems to see the non-aggressive machines in a fond, exasperated ways at their oddities. However, in the latter half of the game, 9S returns to his original views as machine lifeforms only being enemy and vows to exterminate all of them. This vow is not made from his loyalty to mankind, as he already knows of the fact that humanity no longer exists. His vow is made from his anger and despair caused by the death of 2B.
{ Androids reference mankind as their “creators”, and in a sense, sees them as gods. That is because the existence of “humankind” was fabricated exactly for that reason: to be a belief that would motivate the androids in the war. Their loyalty and affection towards mankind is a fundamental part of their design. In the end, even when 9S was filled with despair and anger towards the truth, he was unable to stop hoping for humanity’s touch and existence.
Just like humans yearn to for our creator’s approval and love, androids are unable to stop yearning for their creator’s approval and love. }

As a rule, emotions are forbidden for androids. However, there are personality differences in each android and they tend to be expressive. 9S is especially known to be emotional out of the Scanner types, making him more childish compared to the other YoRHa models. He is generally more kind and affectionate than others, warming up to be 2B immediately after meeting. He even asks 2B to call him by a nickname, “Nines”, that people close to him call (or so he says). When gaining new knowledge, the delight can be heard clearly from his voice and his excitement towards figuring things out and tinkering with new things is well-known. He’s also prone to complain and express his dissatisfaction towards certain mission and the workload. He enjoys making small talk and imagining things humans did, such as shopping and taking baths, and hoping to do them himself when the war ends, even if it’s unnecessary.
{ His highly emotional state is often a driving force that pushes him forward. His joy of learning of new things pushes his curiosity and his affection towards 2B pushes his downfall. Because he enjoyed his time so much with 2B and felt strong affection towards her, her death caused a large backlash of despair and anger. It overwhelmed his curiosity, logical thought and advice, pushing him fight even when badly damaged and ignore rationale to follow through with his revenge. Despite being an android created to gather information to make better decisions, 9S lets his emotions get a hold of him, eventually leading to madness and his death. }

As stated above, 9S is an affectionate android and enjoys having company. He states that he had felt loneliness ever since being created and deployed to the field all by himself, with no one else but the enemy around him during missions.
His operator, 21O, seems to see him as a younger brother and at times treats him such, and 9S seems to return that sentiment and affection towards her as well as he goes out to perform tasks for her and ask her to keep him company on the field. However, since she in an Operator type model, she reminds him her task is to stay in the Space Bunker to relay information to him.
That is why when he joins up with 2B on the field to fight against the machines, one of the first thing he says that he is very happy to be able to work with someone. As the story progresses, he becomes very close to 2B, eventually seeing her as like a family, friend and partner.
{ Despite being someone who enjoys learning information, 9S has the habit of denying or ignoring certain information. He ignores the fact that 2B had been infected by the virus and that was why A2 had killed 2B, choosing instead to direct his hatred towards her. It’s what pushes him to keep fighting after 2B died. He had also ignored what he had suspected: That 2B was in fact an Executioner model (2E), ordered to terminate 9S for knowing too much.
It seemed that this was a trend most 9S types underwent. Thanks to his sharp intuition and reasoning skills, he would figure out that 2B was sent to terminate him. Yet, he would pretend not to know, for reasons differing such as not wanting to accept that as fact to planning a counterattack to terminate 2B first.
His affection towards 2B is strong and true, however. If humankind was his faith, 2B was what he depended on. No matter what happened, 9S refused to let his memories with 2B be tarnished and his feelings towards her to be doubted. Even when he was threatened with the danger of his core data being infected, 9S refused to let his memory be erased, as it would mean his current self that loved 2B would be erased as well. His strong feelings also manifested in a highly possessive side as well, not wanting anyone else but him be close to her, to hurt her, to kill her.
It could be because love for an android is often translated as a desire to destroy. Violence towards each other is often times seen by 9S as a moment to connect physically to her, rather than a painful thing. This could be a reason why when 9S is always being terminated by 2B, he never leaves her with words of anger and pain. He often thanks her time with him, his joy of being by her side, and his wish to meet her again.
Even after discovering the truth and being swallowed by despair, believing that he does not deserve to be loved by the world, to keep on existing, his last words are one of thanks to 2B. Thanking her for making his existence meaningful. }

Noni was born from European parents in a small town nearby Recolle, with residents highly religious and conservative. He was a child born before marriage, and to hide that fact his mother had immediately placed him in the local orphanage run by the church. It was full of rules and regulations, almost military-like in its rigid structure. Faith in an unseen creator was obligatory and questioning it was unacceptable.
But being a curious child, Noni did just that. Not only did he take great interest in science, he often raised questions about the existence of said creator. Naturally, he was labeled as a trouble child. While there some fellow orphans he was close with, none wanted to be associated with the supposed “defective” child. Threats of punishment, actual punishment and solitude did not deter from his pursuit of knowledge. Instead, Noni his church’s meager library for knowledge, then spread out to regular escape to explore and observe nature.
Frustrated with Noni, the orphanage all but kicks him out to Recolle’s orphanage at 12 firmly told to not come back as he was unwelcome. However, that didn’t bother him at all, as moving to the city was one of the best things that had happened to him. Here, he now had the freedom to question and study whatever he wants. He had even made a couple of friends inside and outside the orphanage thanks to his friendly personality. The education was much more well-rounded and of higher standard. After a year in Recolle, he was adopted by Roy and Tracy Matthews, giving him not only parents, but 6 siblings as well. As it is only about 6 months since he has been adopted, Noni is still adjusting to the changes as well as still getting to know his siblings. However, this environment of freedom and people who care for him makes this new life in Recolle one Noni has always dreamed of.

He would do many, many things if it gets his questions answered and no threat of punishment or rules will deter him from that. He’s much more determined to keep on pursuing what he wants to know.
